Joblessness

According to this article in the NY Times all socialist European countries are cutting back on socialist programs in order to save the European economy from utter collapse. French President Jacques Chirac is making some of the most sweeping plans. With unemployment in many developed EU countries reaching 20% he says he doesn't see that they have any choice, but it may take a generation. If this is so, why is the United States heading in the direction that Europe is running from as fast as it can? Are we really that stupid? Maybe so.
